Cat lovers tell me that when you own a cat, it can often feel as though the pet is also your boss. A cat isn’t going to fawn over you, or reduce itself to fawning for your affections. Your feline companion won’t be impressed when you feed him or her. Yet people have welcomed cats into their hearts for millennia. The ancient Egyptians famously worshiped them. Cats traveled the world on Viking ships. Today, they are some of the Internet’s best memes.

Once every month, our neighbor invites her friends to come over for a “pet-nic.” It’s actually a picnic with their pets, all cats. It’s fun to see them hanging out in the garden with their pet cats freely roaming around. Even if we don’t own any pets, we sometimes join them and listen to their stories. We’d always end up having a good time that we thought of giving them a surprise gift.
