A double chair bench with storage table! What do you think? If this is also one of the things you enjoy doing after a long day or during weekends, then here’s a piece of DIY furniture you might want to add to your home!

This furniture item is a chair bench for two with a ‘table’ in the middle for your drinks or books. It can be made of any timber of your choice, as long as it is weather resistant! You can purchase new cedar timber for a bench that will last a long time.

But if you want to keep expenses to a minimum, you can use pallets or other reclaimed timber instead. If you choose to go for the second option, make sure to pick timber that is still in good condition – with no cracks and decay.

Instructions

Step 1: Design and Planning

  • Measure and plan the size of your bench. Typical dimensions might be around 60 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 18 inches high for the seating, with the table section centrally located.
  • Sketch your design, noting where the storage component and the cooler will be incorporated.

Step 2: Cutting the Wood

  • Use the circular saw and miter saw to cut your timbers to the required lengths based on your design.
  • Cut the 2x4s for the frame, 1x6s for the seat and backrest, and 1x4s for the table and additional details.

Step 3: Assembling the Frame

  • Assemble the frame of the bench using the 2x4s. Secure the pieces with wood glue and 2 1/2″ screws.
  • Use the carpenter’s square to ensure all corners are right angles and the spirit level to check the flatness.

Step 4: Adding the Seat and Backrest

  • Attach the 1×6 planks to form the seat and backrest. Start from the bottom up for the seat and ensure each plank is evenly spaced.
  • Secure each plank with 1 1/4″ screws and wood glue.

Step 5: Constructing the Table and Storage Area

  • Build the table section between the two bench seats. Use 1×4 planks for the tabletop.
  • Install hinges at the back of the table section if you want it to lift for accessing the cooler or additional storage underneath.
  • Attach additional support under the table to hold the cooler securely.

Step 6: Sanding and Finishing

  • Sand the entire bench thoroughly to remove any splinters and rough edges. Start with a coarser grit and finish with a finer grit for a smooth finish.
  • Wipe down the bench with a damp cloth to remove sawdust.

Step 7: Applying Finish

  • Apply your chosen wood finish according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Consider using a weather-resistant sealant to protect the wood from the elements.

Step 8: Final Assembly

  • Place the cooler in the designated area and ensure it fits snugly. If necessary, adjust the supports or size of the opening.
  • Install any final touches such as handles or decorative elements.

Step 9: Enjoy Your New Bench

  • Position your new bench in your favorite outdoor spot. Enjoy relaxing, entertaining, and making the most of your outdoor space.

Accessorizing and Decorating Ideas

When you’ve crafted your bench with storage table, it’s not just about functionality—it’s also a chance to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space. Accessorizing and decorating can transform your bench from a simple piece of furniture to a standout feature in your garden, patio, or backyard.

Here are some creative ideas to accessorize and decorate your bench with storage table to make it both charming and functional.

Add Comfort with Cushions and Throws

To make your bench with storage table more inviting, add some stylish cushions. Choose weather-resistant fabrics that complement the outdoors. Thick cushions in vibrant colors or patterns can add a splash of personality. For cooler evenings, drape a few cozy throws over the back of the bench, providing both comfort and a touch of homely charm.

Enhance with Lighting

Illuminate your bench with storage table by adding outdoor lighting. String lights draped around the surrounding area or solar-powered lamps placed on the table can create a warm, inviting glow. For a more functional approach, consider installing a small, rechargeable table lamp to provide just enough light for evening reading or social gatherings.

Incorporate Planters

Surround your bench with storage table with greenery by incorporating planters. Use the storage table to display small potted plants or herbs. For a more dramatic effect, place large planters on either side of the bench. Choose plants that complement the overall design and feel of your outdoor space, such as ferns for a lush look or succulents for a more modern aesthetic.

Practical Touches

Utilize the storage aspect of your bench with storage table by making it a functional part of your outdoor decor. Store outdoor dining essentials like placemats, a table runner, and outdoor dinnerware inside the storage compartment. This not only keeps things handy for impromptu meals but also keeps your table clutter-free.

Seasonal Decor

Adapt the decor of your bench with storage table with the seasons. During spring and summer, bright floral cushions and light linen throws can complement the lively outdoor environment. In the autumn, transition to earth-toned fabrics and during the winter months, accessorize with heavier, textured throws and seasonal decorations like pinecones and holly.

Final Touches

Don’t forget those small, personal touches that make the space uniquely yours. Decorative items like a vintage watering can, a beautiful lantern, or a stylish outdoor clock can add character to your bench with storage table setup. Choose items that reflect your personal style and complement the outdoor environment.

By carefully selecting accessories and decorations, your bench with storage table can become more than just a place to sit—it can transform into a focal point of your outdoor living space, inviting relaxation and enjoyment.

Maintenance and Care Tips

Maintaining your bench with storage table is crucial to ensure it remains a beautiful and functional part of your outdoor space for years to come. Proper care will protect your investment from the elements and wear from regular use. Here are some essential maintenance and care tips to keep your bench with storage table in top condition.

Regular Cleaning

Regular cleaning is vital to maintain the appearance and longevity of your bench with storage table. Wipe down the surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust and pollen. For deeper cleans, use a mild soap and water solution to scrub away grime or bird droppings, then rinse with clean water. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the wood finish or paint.

Weather Protection

Since your bench with storage table is likely exposed to various weather conditions, protecting it from the elements is key. If your bench is made from wood, apply a waterproof sealant once a year to repel water and prevent rot. For metal components, check for any signs of rust or wear and treat them with rust-resistant paint.

Winter Care

During colder months, extra steps may be necessary to protect your bench with storage table. If possible, store it in a shed, garage, or under a waterproof cover. This will prevent snow and ice from causing damage and will reduce the risk of wood warping and splitting.

Inspect and Tighten Fittings

Regularly inspect your bench with storage table for any loose screws or bolts, especially at the start of the season and periodically throughout its use. Tighten any loose fittings to ensure the bench remains stable and secure. This is particularly important for benches with moving parts, like those with lift-up storage tables.

Treat Stains and Repair Damage

Address any stains or visible damage promptly to prevent them from becoming permanent. Use wood putty to fill in any chips or scratches, and sand the area lightly before applying a matching wood finish. For tougher stains on wood, a light sanding followed by a touch-up with wood stain or paint can work wonders.

Refreshing the Finish

Over time, the finish on your bench with storage table can fade or wear off. Refresh the finish as needed to revive its look and protective layer. Whether it’s re-staining the wood or applying a new coat of paint, make sure to clean and sand the surface beforehand for the best results.

Lubricate Moving Parts

If your bench with storage table has hinges or other moving parts, ensure they are lubricated periodically. This prevents them from seizing up and makes opening and closing the storage compartment smooth and effortless.

Following these maintenance and care tips will help ensure that your bench with storage table remains a durable and attractive feature in your outdoor living space. Regular upkeep not only enhances its appearance but also extends its usability over time.

Conclusion

Building a bench with storage table is a rewarding DIY project that enhances both the functionality and aesthetic of your outdoor space. This versatile piece of furniture offers a comfortable seating option and clever storage solutions, perfect for any setting. With the right materials and a bit of effort, you can create a durable and stylish addition to your home.
