The internet is a treasure trove of fresh ideas, some more popular than others. Once in a while, a rather unique “invention” comes up. When shared with the world, one could not help but think, “Why haven’t I thought of that?” While some of these ideas are truly original, others are simply improvements on existing concepts. Either way, it’s always impressive to see what people come up with when they put their minds to it.

For avid DIY-ers, no idea is too small. Sometimes, those considered small spark the biggest interest. Let’s take this turtle shower curtain as an example.

Shower curtains are an essential item for any bathroom. Not only do they serve a practical purpose by preventing water and moisture from leaving the bath or shower area, but they also provide privacy while you’re showering.

In addition, shower curtains can also be used to enhance the look of your bathroom and make it more unique. There are a wide variety of shower curtains available on the market, so you’re sure to find one that suits your taste and style. If you’re looking for something more unusual, you could even consider making your own shower curtain.

The usual is a boring, drab piece of fabric that hangs limply from a shower rod. But what if there was a way to make this essential bathroom item a bit more fun and interesting? This project was born out of that desire to add a little personality to the typical shower curtain.

And it's easily foldable, too!

What you’ll need to build a turtle shower curtain

Materials:

  • 1 shower curtain
  • 17 m PVC pipe 16 mm
  • 14 m PA rope 5 mm
  • 2 Ring screws

Tools:

  • Electric drill
  • Hacksaw
  • Candle

This project involves a lot of bending of PVC pipes. The best way to do this is by putting them above a flame. This will heat the pipes and make them more pliable, allowing you to get the desired 90-degree shape.

Be sure to use gloves when handling the pipes, as they will be hot. You may also want to use a small fan to help cool the pipes down once you have them in the desired shape. For this particular one, you should need to have at least a U shape, 4 of them.

Now that you have your PVC pipes cut to size, it’s time to drill holes in them. Drill holes through the pipes vertically on the short ends, and then drill holes in the wall. Once the holes are all drilled, it’s time to put the screws in and secure the pipes in place.

To prepare the base ropes for the retractable turtle shower curtain, first, measure the desired length of the curtain. Add an extra few inches to account for any movement or stretching of the curtain fabric. Cut the rope to size and then use a lighter to seal the ends of the rope.

This will help prevent fraying and keep the rope in good condition for a longer period of time. Attach the base ropes to the top corners of the shower curtain, making sure that they are evenly spaced. Once the base ropes are in place, you can then begin to work on the retractable mechanism. Then attach the curtain to the frame.
