Materials you’ll need for this DIY wall chessboard project:

  • 16 thin pieces of wood, cut into 16″ lengths
  • 4 pieces of crown moulding, for the frame
  • Stain
  • Polyurethane
  • Black paint
  • 4 long strips of painter’s tape
  • Wood glue
  • 4 small cylindrical dowels
  • 4 rubber bands
  • 2 long square dowels, for the frame

Tools:

  • Electric drill with drill bits
  • Table saw
  • Circular saw
  • Clamps

Steps:

To make the base of the chessboard, you will need to use darker and lighter woods. If you don’t have access to darker woods, you can stain them to create the desired effect. You will need to glue all the strips of wood together with alternating colours.

To make the chessboard as sturdy as possible, use high-quality wood glue and clamp the pieces of wood together while the glue dries. If you want your chessboard to have a smooth finish, sand down the glued edges after the glue has completely dried.

Make sure that your wood pieces have the same width, this will help you create a perfect square later. After the glue has dried, cut the board across in the opposite direction of the alternating board. you can set the height of the board equal to the length of the wood strips. This will give you a nice even edge to work with when you start your project.

Then start by laying out the pieces, slipping every other one to create a checkered design. Be extra careful to ensure that the pieces fit snugly against one another, taking care not to leave any gaps and glue them together, this will make your base of the chess board.

While waiting for the glue to dry, you can now start cutting the checkers. (For more detailed steps, you can check out the video below)

To display your chessboard properly, you will need to attach the frame to the chessboard base. This will allow you to hang the chessboard on the wall so that it can be properly displayed.
