How to Make a Tailgate Wall Bench

Decorating can be expensive. As much as we all wish it were otherwise, making a home look interesting and presentably costs a lot of money. Fabrics, rugs, furniture, mirrors: all these things add up after a while. Throw in some coveted high-end items and you’ll likely blow your budget faster than you can say “Fast.”

But that doesn’t always have to be the case. Sometimes, decorating your home requires nothing more than an old scrap item and some imagination. This DIY tailegate wall bench project is an excellent example.

Having just purchased a home, my wife and I decided the entire house belonged to her except for the garage and back porch, and yard. She may have made a mistake!

A friend gave me this old Ford tailgate after I told him I was decorating my back porch in vintage Gas station/ feed store style. I decided to make a workbench out of it while also using it for decoration.

Building a Tailgate Wall Bench

  • 2- 2 1/2″ X 8″ stove bolts
  • 2- 20″ X 1 1/2″ angle iron
  • 1- 6′ X 1 1/2″ angle iron
  • 1- 6′ X 1/8″ pipe or 1/2″ rebar
  • 2- medium snap rings
  • 4- 1/2″ flat washers
  • 1- 1 1/2″ X 1/4-20 Allen head bolt

Use a 5/8″ drill bit to drill a hole in the centre of the pivot on each end of the tailgate.

Lay an angle iron flush with the side of the tailgate and mark and drill 5/8″ holes in the angle like so.

Once both ends are drilled, lay the tailgate and angles out flat on the table or floor so as to make the assembly of the wall bench easy.

Slide the 1/8″ pipe through all three pieces like so.

TailgateWallBench (9)

Place a flat washer on one end of the pipe and drill a hole through your pipe with a 1/8″ drill bit

Install a cotter pin to lock the pipe in place.

Do the same thing on the other side of the wall bench with the angle tight against the tailgate. Drill as close as possible to the washer for a tight fit.

I found a small table to be the perfect height for the tailgate wall bench and used it to help with the installation. I levelled the tailgate at the right height and positioned the angle pieces on the wall. I actually used a couple of wood screws to hold the wall bench in place while I assembled it.

I then measured down 6 inches and drilled through the angle and all the way through the wall (after checking the wall for electrical of course!) Then I installed the 8″ stove bolts.

I then went to the other side of the wall and marked the long piece of angle iron according to the bolts I had just pushed through the wall. then I drilled it out and mounted it on the 2 bolts and tightened it to the wall. here is where the studs were placed on each end of the brace which was ideal.

Back outside, I attached the cables from the angle iron to the tailgate wall bench on both ends.

I then removed the table. The tailgate hanging is complete.

I then closed the tailgate with the Allen bolt in between the angle iron and the truck latch pin. I marked the spot on the angle then tapped 1/4-20 threads into the angle iron and installed the Allen bolt there.

Finished Bench.

The tailgate now latches against the wall using the original tailgate handle.

My family and I enjoy sitting out here now and firing up the old bbq grill (that old 51 Chevy truck clip is another project. It is a bbq grill) I hope you enjoy your tailgate bench just as much as we do ours. Now go find a tailgate before they’re all gone!

Here’s a quick video showing all the steps to build the wall bench.

Tailgate Wall Bench Maintenance and Care

Maintaining and caring for your tailgate wall bench is crucial to ensure its longevity and preserve its unique character. This type of furniture adds a nostalgic charm to your outdoor or indoor space, combining functionality with a touch of history. Whether it’s a centerpiece in your garden, a quirky addition to your porch, or a functional piece in your garage, a tailgate wall bench demands attention and a bit of TLC.

Below, we’re going into practical tips to keep your tailgate wall bench looking its best year after year.

Regular Cleaning

  • Frequency and Products: Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the appearance and integrity of your tailgate wall bench. Dust and outdoor elements can accumulate, leading to wear and tear over time. Use a soft cloth or brush to remove surface dirt. For more thorough cleaning, mild soap and water will do the trick without damaging the finish. Avoid harsh chemicals, as they can strip paint and corrode metal.
  • Focus on Detail: Pay special attention to crevices and decorative details where dirt and moisture can hide. Using a small brush or toothbrush can help reach these areas, ensuring a comprehensive clean.

Rust Prevention and Treatment

  • Proactive Measures: If your tailgate wall bench is made partly or entirely of metal, rust can be a concern, especially if placed outdoors. Applying a coat of clear lacquer or rust-resistant paint can provide a protective barrier against moisture and prevent rust.
  • Dealing with Rust: Should you spot rust forming, address it promptly to prevent further damage. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to gently remove rust, then apply a primer and repaint the affected area to match the original finish.

Wood Care (If Applicable)

  • Sealing and Protecting: If your tailgate wall bench incorporates wooden elements, it’s vital to protect the wood from the elements. Regularly applying a sealant can prevent moisture damage and UV wear. Choose a product suited for the specific type of wood or the outdoor condition.
  • Regular Inspection: Check the wood for signs of rot or insect damage. Early detection and treatment can save the wooden parts from significant deterioration.
  • Moisture Control: Ensure good air circulation around the wooden parts of your tailgate wall bench to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to mold and mildew. If your bench is positioned on grass or soil, consider placing it on a stone or concrete base to minimize direct contact with moisture.
  • Stain Touch-Ups: Over time, the wood may show signs of wear or fading. Applying a fresh coat of stain can revitalize its appearance. Choose a stain that matches the original color or gives your bench a new look while providing an extra layer of protection.
  • Avoid Direct Contact with Soil: Direct contact with the ground can accelerate wood rot and pest infestation. Use metal stands or stone pavers to elevate the bench slightly off the ground.

Seasonal Adjustments

  • Winter Care: In harsh weather conditions, consider covering your tailgate wall bench with a waterproof cover or storing it in a dry, sheltered place. This can extend its lifespan and keep it looking new for longer.
  • Sun Exposure: Continuous exposure to direct sunlight can fade the paint and weaken materials over time. If possible, place your bench in a location that receives partial shade or use a protective cover during the hottest parts of the day.

Hardware Maintenance

  • Tighten and Replace: Regularly check and tighten any bolts, screws, and fittings that may have loosened over time due to use or weather changes. Replace any corroded or worn-out hardware to ensure structural integrity.
  • Lubrication: Hinges, locks, and any moving parts on the tailgate itself should be lubricated annually to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation. Use a silicone-based lubricant for best results, as it won’t attract dirt or dust.
  • Check for Alignment Issues: Over time, the tailgate or other components may shift, leading to misalignment. This can put additional stress on the hardware and structure. Regularly check for any alignment issues and adjust as necessary to prevent undue wear.
  • Protective Coatings: Apply a thin layer of protective wax or a corrosion inhibitor to the metal hardware to guard against moisture and rust, especially in coastal areas where salt air can be particularly corrosive.

Regular Inspections

  • Routine Checks: Make enjoying your tailgate wall bench part of your routine. This not only allows you to appreciate the fruits of your labor but also helps you spot any issues early on. Regular inspections can prevent small problems from becoming big ones.
  • Look Underneath: Don’t forget to inspect the underside of your tailgate wall bench. This area is often overlooked but can be a critical spot for hidden rust, wood rot, or structural issues, especially if the bench is exposed to the elements.
  • Seasonal Preparations: Before the onset of winter or rainy seasons, give your bench a thorough inspection and maintenance run. This proactive approach can help prevent damage caused by freezing temperatures, snow accumulation, or prolonged wet conditions.
  • Create a Maintenance Schedule: Set reminders for periodic maintenance tasks. Having a schedule ensures that all aspects of your tailgate wall bench are cared for regularly, preventing issues from arising due to neglect.

By following these maintenance and care tips, you’ll ensure that your tailgate wall bench remains a beloved and functional piece of your home’s landscape for years to come. Taking time to care for your bench will pay off, preserving its beauty and the memories associated with it.
